American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten Visits Camden and Rockport to Support Marcus Mrowka’s State House Candidacy
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten visited Camden and Rockport over the weekend to support Marcus Mrowka’s candidacy for State House District 41. The two knocked doors talking to voters across the two towns and held an event with voters at First Fig.
Weingarten, who leads a union of more than 1.8 million educators, health professionals, and other workers, said she supports Mrowka because of his record as a committed problem solver and as a champion for working people and public education.
"Whether it's championing the great public schools that all students deserve or fighting for working people to have a decent life, Marcus doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk. I've worked with Marcus for years. He cares deeply, shows up for people, gets results, and believes fiercely in fairness and opportunity for all. I've witnessed this through his work with AFT and our members, and his leadership on the Five Town CSD and Camden-Rockport Schools school boards. His focus is always on finding real solutions that will create a better future for kids, families, and our communities. I know he will bring that same passion and commitment to deliver for the people of Camden and Rockport in the State House. I'm proud to support him," said Weingarten.
Mrowka has dedicated much of his career to advocating for teachers and public education, including as Chair of the Five Town Community School District, member and former leader of the Camden-Rockport Schools School Board, Director of Communications for the Maine Department of Education, Senior Director of Communications for AFT, former Midcoast School of Technology board member, and working with Educate Maine to launch the Teach Maine Center, a new hub for teacher leadership and professional development. He helped manage the Maine Teacher of the Year program, has advocated for policies to strengthen teaching and learning, and led a nationwide marketing effort to encourage people to come live and teach in Maine. In all of these roles, Mrowka has advocated for fair compensation for educators, increased investments in public schools, creating safe and welcoming environments for all students and teachers, and a focus on project-based real-world learning experiences that engage students. He recently worked with Weingarten on a new education agenda to boost teaching and learning in the AI era.
“It was my public school teachers who helped raise me and provide the support I needed to create a better future for myself. I’ve spent my adult life working to ensure every child has access to the great public schools they need to thrive and to support educators who work tirelessly to engage, support, nurture, and care for their students. I’ll bring that same energy and dedication to educators and public schools to the State House,” said Mrowka.
